Károly Escher, cameraman and outstanding photo artist of the era between the two world wars, died fifty years ago. His life was connected to Erzsébetváros, the 7th District of Budapest in more ways than one. On April 6, 2016 an exhibition will be opened in K11 Art and Cultural Center, where his photos borrowed from the Photo Collection of National Széchényi Library will be exhibited.

You are cordially invited to the opening ceremony of the exhibition entitled “General map of the Kingdom of Hungary, 1804-1810”, organized by National Széchényi Library and the National Archives of Hungary. Celebrating the 250th anniversary of János Lipszky’s birth, the event will be focusing on the hussar officer’s cartographic oeuvre.

Topics of the conference to be held from 10 a.m. on Monday April 18, 2016 include the results and significance of AHF, the database made from the records of  US receiving center hosting the Hungarian refugees of 1956, as well as Mikes Kelemen and Kőrösi Csoma programs.
An exhibition compiled from the most beautiful maps of 2015 will be open between April 1 and April 30, 2016. This year a total amount of 29 maps entered the ”Beautiful Hungarian Map 2015” competition, two of which were published in a digital form. The majority of competing cartographic works serve tourist purposes, presenting mainly the natural and historical values of Hungary.

Studies and essays included the book entitled “Open Library” aim at presenting the contemporary work and diversity of libraries to the Hungarian audience, based on American examples. Most of the experiences of the author living in the United States are valid on an international level. Book presentation will begin at 3 p.m. on April 4, 2016.

Due to technical reasons related to the opening of the Beautiful Hungarian Map exhibition, our Map Collection will be closed at 2 p.m. on Friday April 1.

Finissage of our exhibition entitled Propaganda in World War I will be held on Tuesday April 5, 2016. Miklós Zeidler and Tamás Gusztáv Filep are going to present the catalog of the exhibition, published just recently. Marching songs from the collection of Tamás Cseh will be played, and actress Angéla Császár will also be participating in the event, to be followed by an informal round-table discussion.

The fourth volume of book series entitled Res Libraria, written by art historian Emese Révész on Hungarian illustrated press between 1850 and 1870, will be presented on April 6, 2016, at 4.30 p.m. in National Széchényi Library.

The first Beautiful Hungarian Map competition dates back to 1996. The aim has been to raise the level of Hungarian map culture and help high-quality maps gain more ground. To achieve this aim, the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics of Eötvös Lorand University (formerly Lazarus Mapping Foundation) and the Map Collection of NSZL invite entries to win the title of “Beautiful Hungarian Map” each year.
