István Dubniczay Provost of Hanta, the Patron of the Cistercian Abbey of Zirc

‘Haec est ergo voluntas mea.’ So it is my will – István Dubniczay, the provost of Hanta and member of the Cistercian Order, closed his will with these words, but this sentence could describe his whole life. The former canon of Veszprém was an educated and determined man who never gave up on his goal. He treated alleged or actual attacks on the church as a personal matter. His relationship with his superior, Márton Padányi Biró, had been turbulent for decades, despite the fact that they both had the interests of the Diocese of Veszprém in mind. In the last part of his life he entered the order in Zirc and became a generous patron of the Cistercians. Its name is still preserved in urban legends today.

This gap-filling volume contains the facsimile edition of the manuscript related to István Dubniczay together with its Latin and Hungarian transcripts. The presentation of the life of the provost of Hanta was written by Beáta Vida, historian of the Reguly Antal Museum and Ethnography Workshop, and the study about the manuscript was compiled by Tibor Varga and Balázs Karlinszky, colleagues of the Archives of the Archdiocese of Veszprém.
