Károly Szabó memorial book

For more than two and a half decades, the professional bibliographic organisation of the Association of Hungarian Librarians has dedicated a research session to the recollection of the life’s work of our significant experts, in the series of commemorative meetings entitled Emlékezzünk jeles elődeinkre...!  (Let us remember our eminent ancestors…). Among the great iconic representatives of the profession three bibliographers stand out, who are referred to as ‘the great triad founding our profession in the 19th century’: Károly Szabó (1824–1890), József Szinnyei Sr (1830–1913) and Géza Petrik (1845–1925). After the Petrik volume published in 1996 and the Szinnyei memorial book published in 2014, the Károly Szabó memorial book was finally published in 2020.

The material of the volume is primarily an edited version of the lectures given at the research session commemorating the 125th anniversary of the death of Károly Szabó in 2015, by Miklós Bényei, Gabriella Pogányné Rózsa, György Pogány and Judit P. Vásárhelyi. The funding of the volume by the National Cultural Fund of Hungary coincided with the 195th anniversary of the birth of Károly Szabó, which gave us the opportunity to publish a comprehensive study about him written by Sándor Szabó, as well as a statement on the bibliographical work of Imre Lukinich by György Pogány. The memorial book, which was published in 2020, on the 130th anniversary of Károly Szabó's death, will also include other new features: István Gazda has collected the natural history material of the Early Hungarian Library (and its addenda), and Ferenc Kégli has compiled a complete bibliography of Károly Szabó's works.
