The volume presents the presentations delivered at the National Széchényi Library’s conference entitled A reformáció könyvespolca. Reprezentatív kiadványok Magyarországon a reformáció korából (The bookshelf of the Reformation. Representative publications from the age of the Reformation in Hungary), which was held on 16 October 2017 by book historians of the early modern period to honour the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. The speakers presented prints, series of prints and manuscripts from the holdings of the NSZL and other major historical libraries that played a symbolic or representative role in the history of the Reformation in Hungary and Europe, in terms of their publication, book, binding history or content. These include the works of the reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin in ecclesiastical and secular collections, representative publications of the patronage of certain noble families (e.g. the Rákóczi and the Thurzó family, Pál Ráday, etc.), the most important psalteries and hymnals, sermon volumes, books of meditation and prayer, catechisms, creeds. To the great delight of the organisers, the speakers included two members of staff from the Slovak National Library, Klára Komorová and Helena Saktorová, and Előd Ősz from the Central Archives of the Reformed Diocese of Transylvania. Several researchers from national ecclesiastical institutions also gave presentations. Gabriella H. Hubert represented the Lutheran Central Collection, Dávid Csorba the Great Library of the Reformed College of Sárospatak and Róbert Oláh the Great Library of the Tiszántúl Reformed Church District and College. On behalf of the National Széchényi Library, five members of the staff (Györgyi Borvölgyi, Ferenc Földesi, János Heltai, Balázs Koós and Judit P. Vásárhelyi) presented their research results.

Booklets of Hungarian Book Review and MOKKA-R Association

For centuries, books were the only means of passing on cultural values, so the history of books is related to all the areas of cultural history. No wonder that a number of new institutions for presenting book culture history are currently being set up. As one of Europe’s oldest book history periodicals, Hungarian Book Review cannot assume the publication of all the writings on book history in Hungary, it has joined MOKKA-R (the old books section of Hungarian National Joint Catalogue Association), an entity founded in 1994 to coordinate the elaboration of old books. Our series of booklets presents primarily the lectures held at the MOKKA-R department sessions, but also gives room for works on book history with larger extent than publishable in Hungarian Book Review.

The publishers of the series are NSZL, the Institute for Literary Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Science, and MOKKA-R Association.
