Advent Open Day at the National Széchényi Library 2024

 

Advent is a time of wonder, shared moments and our festive traditions. This year, the museums and libraries of the Hungarian National Museum Public Collection Centre (HNMPCC) are celebrating together, sharing a calendar of experiences with their visitors. Throughout December, 24 free key events and countless other programmes and experiences will be held across the country. 

The national library, our country's first national public collection, is organising an open day in the festive period of anticipation, with a colourful programme of activities for the whole family! You can learn about the fascinating history of our library on our building tour, explore one of our library stack towers to see some of our treasures, and enjoy exhibitions and board games to make the festive season fun for all ages.

Admission to the Open Day is free of charge!
Registration for a reader pass is free of charge on this day. 

 

Getting to the library

The National Széchényi Library is located in the 1st district of the capital, in the building F of the Buda Castle. The main entrance is from the Lions Courtyard between the Hungarian National Gallery and the NSZL. 
The main entrance can be reached by four ways: 

  • from Dísz Square on foot; 
  • from Dózsa György Square on foot, and then by using the elevators on Palota Street; 
  • from the Palace Garden Bazaar on foot and by lift; 
  • from Clark Ádám Square by foot and by using the funicular and taking a short walk.

LIBRARY BUILDING TOUR – 

Wandering around the Buda Castle Palace Building F

During the walk, our visitors may learn about the fascinating history of the building and discover parts of it that still preserve a small piece of the original royal palace.

INDOOR PLAYGROUND BY HOMOLUDENS.HU ASSOCIATION 

Our team has been running indoor playgrounds, craft workshops and creativity programmes across the country for twenty-five years. In 2023, there were more than 150 days where we taught children and adults how to play games or do crafts. In Budapest, we have three board game clubs to come to, so we have a wealth of experience in which games work effectively at events with a diverse mix of visitors.

INDOOR PLAYGROUND FEATURING UNIQUE JIGSAW PUZZLES

Giant jigsaw puzzles to play with, courtesy of Gábor Gondos and Gondosdesign. The smaller and larger, up to 180 centimetres in diameter, aesthetic – inspired by corvina patterns, Arabic ornaments or fractal shapes – social games can be solved in various ways, so participants can also create their own compositions. It is recommended for families with children over six years old and for playful adults.

CRAFT ACTIVITIES

In our craft corner you can make a paper Christmas tree ornament int he form of a snow globe, reindeer, Santa Claus, snowman and angel  using book pages.
