The National Széchényi Library is member of the International Association of Music Libraries (AIBM / IAML), which held its annual congress in Stellenbosch, South Africa, between 21 and 28 June 2024.
The event brought together hundreds of librarians, archivists and musicologists from around the world, including representatives from the music collections of the Library of Congress, The British Library, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and other national libraries.
János Ferenc Szabó, President of the Hungarian National Group of IAML, gave a presentation entitled Audiovisual Collections in Hungary – Where Do We Stand Now?, in which he gave an overview of audiovisual collections in Hungary and presented in detail the sound recording collection of the National Széchényi Library.
At the congress, the thematic and institutional sections of the IAML were re-elected, and Ferenc János Szabó was elected as the President of the IAML Audio-Visual Materials Section.
As this was the first time that IAML held its annual congress on the African continent, a large number of African music collections, as well as European and
American music collections with an African connection, were presented. Several sessions dealt with curricular tasks and major projects of the music library profession, as well as born-digital music formats (e.g. eScores).
In the framework of the congress, the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) held a two-part workshop on sound archives, which also addressed the storage and preservation of audiovisual documents, as well as the organisation and management of audiovisual archives. The IAML 2025 Congress will take place in Salzburg.
