Digitisation and sustainability of cultural heritage in focus
The conference Heritage Preservation for a Sustainable Future was held in Yerevan for the second time this year, organised by the National Library of Armenia. [2] The event aims to highlight the importance of cultural heritage preservation for promoting sustainable development.
The event, held between 3 and 5 October 2024, was attended by around 100 experts from 20 countries, including five representatives of the Hungarian National Museum Public Collection Centre National Széchényi Library (HNMPCC NSZL), who shared their experiences and achievements with an international audience.

The first speaker from the national library was Gyula Kalcsó, who spoke in the "Brave New World" panel on the challenges of using artificial intelligence in libraries. In his presentation entitled Integration of Artificial Intelligence into the Services of the National Széchényi Library, our colleague described how the HNMPCC NSZL has integrated artificial intelligence into its own processes and how it plans to further apply it to the preservation of cultural heritage.
Mátyás Attila Rényi, in his presentation Digitalization and Digital Preservation in the Hungarian National Széchényi Library: Saving the Cultural Heritage of the Hungarian Diaspora through means of Digital Preservation, gave a presentation on the new opportunities offered by the digitisation capacity through the Mikes Kelemen Programme. The presentation highlighted the potential of using documents from the diaspora – representing the cultural value of the country – through digitisation.

Krisztina Franges, in her presentation The Role of Packaging Technology in Library Preservation, presented new technologies for library preservation, highlighting the innovative packaging solutions of the national library, which support not only the protection of artefacts but also sustainability.
In his presentation Challenges of Online Publishing. Digital Preservation of Historical Photographs, Viktor Papp introduced the processes of digitisation of photographs, with special regard to the specificities of the HNMPCC NSZL's Fotótér [9](Photospace) platform and the compliance with international requirements.
Péter Perger presented the history of the Armenian types of Miklós Misztótfalusi Kis, the renowned type cutter and printer, in his lecture The Armenian Types of Miklós M. Tótfalusi Kis, which demonstrated the special relationship between the Hungarian and Armenian culture.
The presentations and subsequent discussions at the conference highlighted the important role that new technologies will play in the future in preserving cultural heritage. The presence and presentation of experts from the HNMPCC NSZL was an important contribution to the international exchange of experiences.
